Sloyd Youth Woodworking
The Sloyd Youth Woodworking Program brings the tradition of Scandinavian sloyd education to Peekskill, giving young people the chance to learn woodworking in a way that shapes both skills and character. Under the guidance of artist and educator Kurt Steger, students are trusted to use real tools, held to high standards, and supported with the belief that they are capable of meeting those standards.
What Participants Learn
Woodworking techniques: measuring, planing, carving, and joinery
Respect for tools, materials, and the process
Independence and confidence through hands-on problem solving
Growth mindset: the understanding that effort and persistence build mastery
The balance of hands, head, and heart in learning
Why It Matters
Sloyd is more than woodworking. It is a philosophy of education that challenges students to grow while making them feel respected and capable.
By combining craft, creativity, and character development, Sloyd instills habits of focus, resilience, and pride that last a lifetime.
